Designation and Protection

The Heritage Resource Management Branch of Alberta Community Development is the provincial agency responsible for the preservation of Alberta’s architectural resources. The legal mechanism currently available to achieve this objective is designation of individual buildings as either Registered or Provincial Historic Resources pursuant to Sections 19 and 20 of the Historical Resources Act of Alberta. The Heritage Resource Management Branch also maintains an inventory of potential historical sites, the vast majority of which are buildings.

Grant assistance is available for the ongoing conservation of designated historic resources through the Heritage Preservation Partnership Program of the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation.
