Heritage Notes #8 (pdf)
David Koshman
The floors in just about every older
house have problems of one sort or another. More often
than not, these minor annoyances are nothing more than
that, and are part of an older building’s character. In
some instances, however, problems created by moisture,
settling, or insect and fungal attacks require further
attention. This Heritage Note will examine the elements
that make up the subfloor’s structural system, identify
the problems one might expect to encounter, and offer
possible solutions for some of the problems a homeowner
may encounter with his or her floors.
Subjects covered in this Heritage Note:
- Flooring Paper
- The Floor Joists
- Bridging Between the Joists
- Beams
